The human resource and safety director is directly responsible for the overall administration, coordination and evaluation of the human resource and safety functions.  The position will partner with the company’s executive team and management to achieve strategic and operational goals of the business and departments.

 Essential Functions

  1. Responsible for proposing, developing, implementing, and coordinating company programs, policies, and procedures covering all areas of Human Resources and Safety, including: employee relations, performance management, compensation, employee selection, recruitment, and talent development.
  2. Guides management and employee actions by researching, developing, writing, updating and recommending policies, procedures, methods, and guidelines.
  3. Communicates and promotes organizational values.
  4. Supports management by providing human resource advice, counsel, and decisions.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position manages all employees of the HR and safety departments and is responsible for the performance management and hiring of the employees within that department.

Work Environment

This job is based in an office environment, but includes time in manufacturing settings as well. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers and smartphones.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position and can require extended hours and weekend work from time to time.


Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel mainly in the Midwest may be expected.

Required Education and Experience

  1. Bachelor's degree and 10+ years’ related experience or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Experience in manufacturing or industrial type organization.
  3. Experience with safety and OSHA in manufacturing, industrial or service fields.

This professional, full-time human resources generalist position performs recruitment and selection activities as well as a wide variety of human resources management responsibilities, including training and development, new employee onboarding, continuous improvement initiatives, personnel and payroll systems processing, compensation management, labor relations, and policy administration and development.  Work is performed under the direction of the Employee Resources Director. 



Bachelor's degree from an approved college/university in Human Resources Management or related field and two years work experience in the Human Resources field; Master's degree in related field and experience in recruitment, training and development, and process improvement initiatives desirable.  Professional certification in Human Resources preferred.  Equivalent combination of job-related education and/or experience may be considered.



·         Develops, plans and administers recruitment and selection systems for a variety of job classes; prepares recruitment materials and identifies sources for candidates; evaluates applicant qualifications and refers applicants to departments for interviews; answer applicant, department, and public questions regarding recruitment and personnel issues; assists departments in developing interview questions or conducting interviews.  Researches, reviews, selects, and evaluates job-related selection tools.  Coordinates and administers skills testing.

·         Utilizes a web-based applicant tracking system for recruitment activities and report generation.  Assists candidates and department managers in using the online applicant system.

·         Coordinates post offer physicals, drug tests, and psychological exams.

·         Coordinates random CDL drug and alcohol testing for employees as required by federal CDL transportation rules.

·         Develops, coordinates, and conducts a variety of training programs such as sexual harassment, performance appraisal, continuous improvement methods, etc.

·         Advises County departments in interpreting and administering personnel policies and procedures and labor agreements; develops and implements County policies and procedures for federal and state laws; interprets and applies federal and state laws to individual requests and situations; maintains required records.

·         Stays current with new developments, technologies, methods, theories, and processes as related to human resources management.

·         Proactively participates as part of the Employee Resources Department team in improving human resource systems.
